Our name ‘Awarua,’ gifted to us by Ngāti Toa Rangatira Kaumatua Dr Taku Parai, is taken from the tale of ‘Awarua the Taniwha’ and ‘Rereroa the Albatross’. It is a tale that shows the perseverance and courage of ‘Awarua’ who lived in Porirua Harbor long ago. Awarua’s dream was to soar the skies like his friend Rereroa, so he sought the help of Rereroa to teach him to soar. Awarua however had small wings which made flying near impossible. Despite this challenge, Awarua persevered day after day and after many failures Awarua finally flew.
Like Awarua, we believe in persevering with courage to overcome challenges and surpass our expectations and soar. We know with the help of each other and by working together like Awarua and Rereroa, we can reap the rewards of all worlds/environments and make this a reality.
